Disney's Wilderness Lodge

Disney's Wilderness Lodge is a deluxe hotel within the Magic Kingdom resort area at Disney World. The inspiration for this impressive resort comes from the grand old lodges of the American National Park Service; there is something special about this resort and it's easy to see why it consistently earns high marks from Disney resort guests. Disney's Wilderness Lodge does not have access to the monorail system but does provide direct transportation to the Magic Kingdom via boat; the other theme parks are reached by bus. This is the least expensive hotel in the Magic Kingdom resort area, making it very popular with families.

Wilderness Lodge Pro & Con

Advantages - Very comfortable resort with lots of on-site amenities like dining and shopping. You can watch the Electric Water Pageant from the beach or boat dock. You can ride a boat directly to the Magic Kingdom. Proximity to the monorail loop resorts greatly expands your dining options. The resort is well themed and that carries out to the well designed pool area. There is an artificial geyser that goes off on the half hour during the day. This is one of those Disney resorts where you can have a great time even if you never go to one of the theme parks - there are outdoor movies, special activities for the kids, and even classes like archery. The "Standard" and "Woods View" rooms are among the best values found at the Disney deluxe resorts. There are some rooms with a queen bed plus a set of bunk beds which can be nice for families with children who don't want to sleep together. The Disney Vacation Club (DVC) area - called the Villas at Wilderness Lodge - has rooms with kitchens.

Disadvantages - Even though it is one of the best values among the Disney deluxe resorts, it isn't cheap and may be beyond the budget of many families. Rooms above the Whispering Canyon Cafe can get some of the noise from the restaurant. Most of the rooms can only accommodate four guests; it is possible to have five to a room if the fifth person is a baby in a crib. Restaurants can be a bit of an issue here - the food court is a little too small and finding a table can be a hassle during peak travel times. There are two table-service restaurants at the resort but Artist Point is a "Signature Dining" location which means that it may be too expensive for regular use. The Whispering Canyon Cafe is cute but it is also noisy and you may not be interested in having straws thrown at you multiple times during a trip. The resort could benefit from a "normal" restaurant. However, your proximity to the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, and Contemporary resorts do open up a lot of restaurant options for you.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort Dining

  • Artist Point - Fine dining that is famous for its Cedar Plank Salmon. This restaurant is a "Signature Dining Experience" and will require two table-service meal credits for those on the Standard or Deluxe Disney Dining Plan.
  • Whispering Canyon Cafe - Western themed restaurants with fun activities for younger kids. This is a very popular restaurant and dinner reservations often fill up early. The "Whispering" part of the name is either ironic or just an out-and-out lie because this restaurant is noisy by design with dinner bells and obnoxious servers being part of the fun. My wife will only go to this restaurant on a non-theme park day; she says it is just too much after all the auditory and visual stimulation of a day in a Disney park. If you go, be sure to ask for catsup, request straws, or get a refill on your drink.
  • Territory Lounge - Get a beer, cappuccino, or espresso here. Appetizers also available from 5:00 - 10:00PM.
  • Trout Pass - Poolside refreshments.
  • Room Service - Available for breakfast from 7:00AM - 11:00AM and dinner from 4:00PM to Midnight.
  • Miss Jenny's Pizza Delivery - from 4:00PM to Midnight. (Keep in mind that the only thing Disney doesn't do well is pizza.)

Disney's Wilderness Lodge Transportation

  • Boat Transportation - You can catch two different water launch routes.  One takes you directly to the Magic Kingdom.  The other route takes you to the Fort Wilderness Campground and Resort, the Contemporary Resort Hotel then back to the Wilderness Lodge.
  • Bus Transportation - Buses are available to all theme parks, water parks and Downtown Disney.

Our Opinion of Disney's Wilderness Lodge:

Disney's Wilderness Lodge resort has a lot to offer. There is an impressive level of detail here - they didn't just slap a few lodge style decor items onto a standard hotel. Being close to the Magic Kingdom theme park is certainly a benefit, especially since you generally pay less than the rates found at the Magic Kingdom / Monorail loop resorts. Because of all the on-site and nearby activities, this is another example of a Disney resort that you can visit and have a great time without ever going to a theme park. The stately grandeur of this resort can provide a pleasant counterpoint to the bright and busy feel of the theme parks. The resort goes the extra mile in making things fun and comfortable for families and many of our clients return to this resort again and again. There are those, however, who don't think "lodge" when they look for deluxe accommodations - if you fall into that category, you might prefer the Disney Grand Floridian, Contemporary, or Yacht Club resorts. You may run across older websites that say you can see the Magic Kingdom fireworks from this resort but that is generally not the case now that the trees that surround this hotel have grown up and filled out - if you could, Disney would certainly create a special "theme park view" room category and charge accordingly for it.
