Traveling Solo to the Disney theme parks is a great option for women.

Traveling Solo to the Disney theme parks is a great option for women.

As a single woman, I know how intimidating it can be to travel by yourself. I always dreamed of one day traveling to Europe with my husband once my daughters were all grown and on their own. Well, the daughters are all grown, but the husband is gone (he’s alive and well, just not residing at the same address any longer…) and I find myself longing to travel but afraid to do so on my own!

There is one place that I’ve never been afraid to travel to on my own and that is any Disney destination! I have been to both Disney World and Disneyland on my own, and not once have I ever felt unsafe. I'm focusing on the Disney theme parks here but all of the below information is also true of the Universal Orlando theme parks and resorts. I'll talk about my recent solo Disney Cruise to Alaska in a future article. I haven't done an Adventures by Disney trip to Europe yet but it is on my bucket list!

If staying in a Disney World Value or Moderate resort, your room will have an outside entrance, but I’ve never felt unsafe due to this. There are locks as well as chains on the doors and never heard of anyone busting through one! I’ve always felt very safe at any Disney resort I’ve ever stayed at. I have even been known to head down to the resort food court or the ice machines late at night. Some Disney World and all Disneyland Deluxe resorts have inside hallway entrances, which I know make some people feel safer.

Of course, the parks are more secure than Fort Knox! With every single bag checked, and now everyone having to go through a metal detector, how much safer can you be? I once took my mom with me to Disney World and she did not want to stay at the park late. I told her that I would take her back to the resort and return on my own. Well my 70-something mother was worried sick that something might happen to her 50-something daughter. I told her not to worry, because no one was going to pay $100 to go to a park and try to kidnap my puffy self with all the security they have at the parks! (She still called me every 15 minutes to make sure I was safe! Lol…) Once again, I’ve never felt unsafe while attending a Disney park.

What are some more advantages of taking a solo trip to a Disney destination?

  • Your schedule...you can do what you want, when you want to! Want to sleep in a little..go ahead! Relax! You don’t have to worry about anyone else getting bored!

  • Single Rider Lines. Many of the really popular rides have a single rider line. This means that if you aren’t traveling with anyone else (or you don’t mind joining another group on a ride) you can get through some lines a lot quicker by using the Single Rider Line!

  • Dining - Let’s face it...choosing a restaurant is tough when you’re with a group! When you are alone, if you feel like having ice cream for breakfast, go ahead! Who is going to stop you!!?? Is there a Signature restaurant you’ve been dying to try, but the price for 2 or more people is a little high? If you’re all by yourself, you can splurge a little on dining! Forgot to make a dining reservation at one of the many table service restaurants? Go ahead and try to walk in to one without a reservation! It’s much easier for them to seat one person as a walk-in, than a party of 4 or more.

  • Epcot Festivals - The International Food and Wine Festival, Flower and Garden Festival, Festival of the Arts, and Festival of the Holidays all have music, demonstrations, food and entertainment that solo adult travelers really enjoy at their own pace, allowing you to pick the experiences that interest you and ignore the ones that don't.

I will say that while I do miss screaming and laughing on Big Thunder Mountain with my daughter, I also really enjoy the time on my own to just to wander around the parks. I am a professional photographer so sometimes I take my camera gear with me when I go solo so that I can just walk around photographing things without hearing the eye roll from my daughters! I also like to take time to visit some of the other resorts when I’m doing a solo trip. I love to visit the resorts just to look around and take pictures. Sometimes I’ll even stop for a bite to eat at one of the food courts. It’s always fun to visit a resort that I’ve never stayed at. I especially love stopping by Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter for some man-catching beignets, although they’ve never worked for me! On nights that I don’t have a park ticket, I love to go to Disney’s Grand Floridian or Polynesian Village resort, grab a little snack and watch the fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle from the resort. It’s a very lovely way to watch fireworks without all the crowds.

I write all of this to say to you...If you are single and looking to take a vacation on your own, I can’t think of a better place to go! No worries about getting safely to your destinations, no worries about the security of your room, and no need to worry about getting kidnapped from a Disney park!
