What Is A Dole Whip?

Dole Whips at Disney World and Disneyland

Imagine yourself miserably hot and humid - you dread moving because that'll just make you even hotter. Then someone (maybe an angel) hands you a dish of a cheerful yellow, softly frozen pineapple (flavored) treat. From the first bite, your outlook brightens while visions of hula girls dance in your head. Okay, that might be a little bit of over-sell but Dole Whips are just plain wonderful! My whole family loves them and we'll use any excuse to get one.

If you prefer hard facts to hyperbole, here is the official (though uninspiring!) description: "Dole Soft Serve Mix is a lactose free dry mix that is reconstituted with tap water and frozen down in a soft serve machine. Marketed under the popular Dole brand name, this unique product delivers an intense, natural pineapple fruit flavor, yet is fat free and cholesterol free.". That may be technically accurate but it certainly fails to capture the joy your taste buds experience when introduced to a Dole Whip

Where To Get A Dole Whip at Disney World

Aloha Isle - Magic Kingdom Theme Park - Adventureland Area :This refreshment stand carries both pineapple and vanilla Dole Whip. You can also get pineapple spears, pineapple juice, and Dole Whip floats here. If you're on a Disney Dining Plan, you can use one of your snack credits to get a Dole Whip. There are those - even in my own family - who get sprinkles on their Dole Whips. Sprinkles!?!? Yuck! Click here to learn how to skip the line at Aloha Isle using mobile ordering.

The floats have Dole Whip floating in pineapple juice - very refreshing.

TIP: If there are multiple lines, check to see which server gives the bigger servings and get in that line.

Tamu Tamu - Disney’s Animal Kingdom - Africa Area: This location sells a cups of Pineapple Dole Whip suitable for children and teetotalers like myself but they also offer a very popular option that includes dark rum or coconut rum for those who can present photo ID proving that they are at least 21-years old.

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is a seasonal event usually held from early March to Early June. The festival’s Pineapple Promenade usually features both regular Dole Whip and a pineapple float made with Coconut Rum.

Marketplace Snacks at Disney Springs also sells Dole Whip.

Everything Pop at Disney’s Pop Century sells pineapple soft-serve and pineapple floats from 6PM to 11PM.

Pineapple Lanai, at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort Hotel - located just outside the Great Ceremonial House (main building), sells Dole Whips but doesn't carry as many items as Aloha Isle, in the Magic Kingdom. No sprinkles here but you can buy a souvenir tiki bowl or sipper.

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, sells a drink called Spikey Pineapple that features Barbancourt Pango Rhum blended with Dole Whip. Must be 21 or older.

TIP: My family loves to buy a Dole Whip at Pineapple Lanai just before going out to the Polynesian resort's "beach" area to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electric Water Pageant (floating parade). This is one of life's simple pleasures.

Where to Find Dole Whip at Disneyland

Tiki Juice Bar - Disneyland Theme Park - .Did you know that the Tiki Birds were the first Disney Animatronic figures? It is a quaint show and the line for Dole Whips is often shorter on the show's courtyard side than on the Adventureland side. You can use Disneyland app mobile ordering to skip the line at this location.

Tangaroa Terrace - Disneyland Hotel now serves Dole Whip soft serve, Dole Whip floats and Dole Whip floats with Rum.

The Coffee House - Disneyland Hotel sells Dole Whip and Dole Whip floats.

Dole Whip at Aulani - A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii

Aulani - A Disney Resort & Spa on beautiful Oahu Island in Hawaii has Dole Whip available for purchase at the Ulu Cafe.

Of course, you might also want to visit the Dole Plantation while you’re on Oahu and try a Dole Whip there.. The Plantation Grill offers Dole Whip cones, cups, waffle cones, waffle bowls, a float and Dole Whip cups with topping.

Does Everyone Like Dole Whips?

Strangely enough, there is a small minority of people who think Dole Whips are terrible. There are also some people who think Dole Whips are entirely over-rated - they aren't bad; they're just not amazing. I'll admit that nostalgia may be part of the attraction since many people experience these for the first time while on vacation.

Disney sometimes goes a little crazy around Christmas, serving Dole Whips that are tinted green or red and some people find that just a little weird.

You Can Make Dole Whip at Home

If you have a sorbet maker, you can purchase a 4-pound bag of Dole Whip mix from Amazon for about $25 and enjoy a Dole Whip at home any time you want. The video below tells you what to do. Click here to order Dole Whip Mix - they even have other flavors.

Similar to Dole Whip - Recipes to Try at Home

It may not be convenient for you to head to Disney World for a Dole Whip or to purchase a bag of Dole Whip mix so here are a few look-alike recipes that might get you through a Dole Whip craving. These include dairy products but they're probably more nutritious that the real Dole Whips.

Dole Whip (Easy Version)

Ingredients:

  • Frozen Pineapple Chunks

  • Juice of one fresh lime

  • Coconut milk, other milk, or pineapple juice

Put the pineapple chunks, lime juice and enough coconut milk to keep things moving in your blender and blend until smooth. Try not to add too much liquid, if possible, but you can just put the mixture in your freezer for a little while before serving if the mixture is too soft. We tried this first without lime juice but we find the lime juice actually enhances the pineapple flavor.

DOLE WHIP (VERSION 2)

Ingredients

  • 1 quart pineapple juice (Dole)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 3 cups cream

  • 3 cups sugar

  • milk

Directions

Mix the pineapple juice and sugar -- make sure that the sugar is dissolved. Next add the cream and vanilla. Pour the whole mixture into a 4-quart Ice Cream freezer container. Add milk to finish filling to the "fill line". At this point simply follow the instructions on your ice cream maker. When the ice cream is ready you can serve it as is or you can stick it in the freezer for a while and let it set up a bit. Makes 8 Servings

DOLE WHIP (VERSION 3)

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (20 oz. each) DOLE crushed pineapple

  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice

  • 2 tbsp. lime juice

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

Directions

Drain pineapple: reserve 2 tbsp. juice. Set aside.Place pineapple, lemon juice, lime juice, sugar and reserved pineapple juice in blender. Cover and blend until smooth.Pour into two 1-quart freezer zipped bags. Store bags flat in freezer. Freeze 1 1/2 hours or until slushy. Stir pineapple slush gently into whipped cream until slightly blended in large bowl.Return to freezer until completely frozen, about 1 hour and serve.

Disney World Mobile Ordering Now Available with Disney Dining Plans, Credit Cards and debit

Disney Mobile Ordering now available for Disney Dining Plans and Debit/Credit Card orders at many Disney World Quick-Service restaurants.

Disney Mobile Ordering now available for Disney Dining Plans and Debit/Credit Card orders at many Disney World Quick-Service restaurants.

Did you see the announcement today that you can now use your Disney Dining Plan credits to take advantage of mobile ordering at the Disney World quick-service restaurants?   Quick-service restaurants are where you traditionally have ordered your food at the counter and carried it to the table.  With Mobile Ordering, you can totally skip the line to order your food; here's how it works....

Let's say you and your family are in line to see Festival of the Lion King at Disney's Animal Kingdom and you plan to have lunch at Pizzafari after the show.   You can use that time waiting for the show to order your lunch through the MyDisneyExperience app.   After the show, you just head over to the restaurant and, when you arrive, you go into the app and click the "I'm here - Prepare My Food" button while you and your family find a table.   The app will let you know when your food is ready to be picked up at the Mobile Ordering Pick-Up Window and the appropriate number of dining credits are deducted from your plan.  It is as easy as that!

Available for Credit Card payment too:  Don’t have a Disney Dining plan? That's fine - you can still pre-order using the app and pay with the credit card you've linked to your MyDisneyExperience account.   Mobile Ordering is not available when paying with cash.

Check out the short video to learn more!

Alcohol included in 2018 Disney World Dining Plans

Disney World News - Alcohol included in 2018 Disney World Dining Plans for guests age 21 & older where available at quick-service and table-services restaurants.

Disney World News - Alcohol included in 2018 Disney World Dining Plans for guests age 21 & older where available at quick-service and table-services restaurants.

The big surprise in today's release of 2018 packages is that alcohol is now included as a beverage option in the Disney Dining Plans for guests age 21 or older. Here is the fine print: "Guests 21 and older can choose either one non-alcoholic beverage (including specialty beverages where offered) or one single-serving mixed cocktail, beer, or wine (where offered) within their meal entitlement. Guests 21 and older must present valid ID to be served alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages may only be redeemed with a Quick-Service or Table-Service meal entitlement."

A single-serving alcoholic beverage includes items such as:

  • Beer or Cider
  • Wine or Sangria
  • Mixed Drinks and Specialty Cocktails

Please note the following ID requirements required to purchase alcoholic beverages at any establishment throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Alcohol will not be served to anyone who does not present valid identification upon request.

Visitors from outside the United States are required to present both a valid passport and another form of government-issued photo identification from their country of origin. Foreign driver’s licenses or ID cards are not acceptable by themselves.

The following forms of ID will be accepted as proof of age:

  •  U.S. state driver’s license (includes U.S. territories – Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa)
  • U.S. state ID (includes U.S. territories)
  • U.S. military ID
  • Original passport
  • Copy of passport (either on paper or captured on a mobile device), along with a government photo ID that verifies the person and birth date show on the copy
  • NEXUS card issued by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (Canadian Guests only)

Non-alcoholic Specialty Beverages in 2018 Disney Dining Plans

Another great change is that some non-alcoholic specialty beverages have also been included:

  • Artisanal Milkshakes
  • Fresh Smoothies
  • Premium Hot Chocolate
  • As always - Soda, Coffee or Tea

Garden Grocer Offers Holiday Meal Delivery to Disney Hotels

Did you see that Garden Grocer is offering holiday meal delivery (ham or turkey) to the Disney World resort hotels now through Dec. 24? They're fully cooked but require reheating. Order at least 15 days in advance and save 5% or order 30 days in advance to save 7%.  This is a nice option if you're in a Disney villa (1-bedroom or larger) or a cabin at the campground and have a stove available to you; most standard hotel rooms at Disney World do not have a microwave or stove. Studio villas and family suites have microwaves.   Click the photo above to go to the Garden Grocer website.

I love this scene with a full turkey being cooked over a little barbecue grill in front of a tiny trailer from Disney's Winter Summerland miniature golf course.

New! Festival of Fantasy Parade Dining Package Introduced at Magic Kingdom

The Festival of Fantasy Parade lunch package is a wonderful new dining option for guests at the Magic Kingdom beginning October 10, 2016.   With this package, you enjoy a prix fixe lunch at Tony's Town Square restaurant and you receive a voucher that allows you to watch the Disney Festival of Fantasy parade from a reserved area in front of the flagpole on Main Street USA.  This is a fantastic spot to watch the parade you see the castle in the background as the colorful and whimsical floats come towards you and it also provides a great view of the side of the floats as they make their turn before exiting the park.   I also love that this eliminates the need to stake out a spot early to see this delightful Disney World parade.

Your lunch will include a three-course meal: appetizer, entree, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage).  Cost: $45 per adult / $17 per child (age 3 - 9), plus tax and gratuity.   This is a great value for anyone on a Disney Dining plan as this experience only costs one table-service meal credit per person.

Advance reservations are required.  If you've booked your Disney vacation through us, your Build A Better Mouse Trip travel agent can make reservations on your behalf - subject to availability.   If not, you can call Disney dining reservations at 407-WDW-DINE.  This can now be booked online through the end of February, 2017; look for "Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade Dining Package". There are several block-out dates: Nov. 11 & 12, Nov. 20 - 26, Dec. 18, 2016 - Jan. 1, 2017 and Feb. 18 - 20, 2017.

Disney World Vacation Tip: Eat Outside Your Comfort Zone

Disney World Vacation Tip: Eat Outside Your Comfort Zone - you'll be glad you did!

Disney World Vacation Tip: Eat Outside Your Comfort Zone - you'll be glad you did!

Disney has SO much more to offer than burgers and chicken - foods from all over the world are at your fingertips, so be open to trying new things - we bet you'll find something absolutely wonderful you didn't know existed!

We tried a lunch at Sanaa, at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge,  on our last trip - out of the ordinary for us. We ordered butter chicken because we recognized the words "butter" and "chicken", but what were tamarind chutney, red chile sambal, and cucumber raita? We have no idea, but they were delicious. Vindaloo? Completely clueless, but it tasted awesome. We didn't even know "kefta" was a word until our daughter ate it.

Give something new and unexpected a try - odds are you'll be glad you did!

If not.....Pineapple Whips cure most ills.

Disney World Free Dining 2016 - Computer Glitch Provides Possible Dates

A weird thing happened on the Disney Travel Agent Website recently....some dates were posted for this year's Disney World Free Dining Promotion and then were quickly taken down again.  Nothing is certain until it is officially announced but the qualifying arrival dates that were briefly posted for this year's Disney World Free Dining promotion were:

  • August 23 - October 1, 2016
  • November 15 - 21, 2016
  • November 26 - 28, 2016
  • December 10 - 21, 2016

Remember that your arrival date is the thing that determines promotion eligibility - if the dates above are correct, the person who arrives on December 21st will have free dining for the full duration of their trip, even though most of their vacation is outside of the promotion dates but the person who arrives on August 22nd will not qualify for free dining, even though most of their vacation would be within the qualifying dates.   In a case like that, we will often book a "room only" reservation for the arrival date and then have the package start the next day.  Other restrictions may apply - for example, certain resorts or room categories are sometimes excluded.

Again,  I need to stress that none of this is official yet but think a Disney World the promotion will be released very soon - probably on or near April 25th.  Once officially announced, competition will become fierce for reservations at popular restaurants as soon as it is released.  We'd love to help you avoid all that stress and disappointment by getting your reservations in place now.  We can book your Disney World vacation package now and book dining reservations for all arrivals through mid-October 2016.  Lots of other people are already doing the same thing and we're already having trouble getting reservations at certain restaurants.  Once the Free Dining Promotion is released, we'll immediately apply it to all of our clients' qualifying reservations; saving you the hassle and worry of watching for you.  You can cancel later so there's no good reason to wait!

Will Disney Keep Offering Free Dining?

Will Disney World continue to offer Free Dining Promotions?

I have no secret, insider information and while I do think there is a very good chance we’ll see a Disney World free dining promotion for this fall, for the first time, I am not sure how much longer it will be offered.  Here are my thoughts - construction walls in the parks and worries about hurricanes or the economy  will impact the number of bookings at Disney World and these are all good reasons to think Disney will roll out a proven performer like free dining to keep people coming through the gates this fall.  Here's the thing, they have released a modified "Free Meal" offer that includes only one quick-service meal per guest, per night for guests staying at a value resort the past couple of summers.  This is actually a really great deal compared to typical summer offers but I can't help but wonder if Disney is testing the response to this promotion as a potential way of phasing out full free dining promotions once they start opening those new Star Wars, and Toy Story lands they're building.  Those new lands are very ambitious projects that are sure to drive big numbers of guests to the parks.  Couple that with the fact that, in 2017, the changed the Free Dining Promotion so that only Deluxe resorts received the Disney Dining Plan that includes a table-service meal per night of stay, now both moderate resorts and value resorts only receive the quick-service dining plan for free and have to pay the difference between the quick-service and standard plans.  Disney may be hoping that they won't need to feed us for free to get us to come, even during hurricane season.

Wouldn't it be great if I am wrong?   People have been predicting the demise of Free Dining for years and Disney continued to offer it; perhaps they will continue to do so for years to come.  I hope so!

Why You Should book your Disney World Vacation Before a Free Dining Promotion is Announced

When Disney World releases a free dining promotion, people book their trip and then they start booking their dining right away and popular locations like Chef Mickey, O'hana, Teppen Edo, and Be Our Guest fill to capacity almost immediately.  Free Dining is usually announced sometime between late March and early May for late August or early September arrivals.  Disney World dining reservations can be booked 180 days prior to arrival, which means that you can begin booking dining reservations into the typical Free Dining Promotion period in early March.   The easiest and most relaxed way for you to plan your vacation and get the restaurants you want is to let one of our agents get your trip booked now and we'll help you map out which park you'll visit on each day of your vacation, then we'll book your dining reservations on your behalf as soon as your 180 day reservation window opens.  Your top choices will be secured for you before the free dining frenzy begins and then your agent will apply the free dining promotion to your existing reservation just as soon as the promotion is released, subject to Disney terms and conditions.  Your agent will let you know right away if any modifications need to be made to participate.  You don't have to keep watching for a promotion release because we're taking care of that for you.   The deposit is only $200 and is completely refundable up to 30-days prior to arrival so there is absolutely no risk - you can cancel for a full refund if free dining is not offered or your plans change.   Booking your trip now is like getting all the "Black Friday" deals and getting to sleep in on the day after Thanksgiving!

Jeni's Review of the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue!

Review of Disney's Hoop Dee Doo Revue Dinner Show at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort at Campground at Disney World.

Welcome to Pioneer Hall and the Hoop-de-doo Musical Revue! Where the food is hot, the drinks are not, and the food is well...bear-able! But seriously though, aside from the puny jokes and crazy show, you can really take a load off and enjoy the Hoop-de-doo Musical Revue!

More chicken, more chicken, more chicken, let’s eat? All the food is served family style. Grub includes bread, a dinner salad, barbecue spare ribs, fried chicken, corn, baked beans, and strawberry shortcake. To drink there’s soft drinks, coffee, tea and milk for kids of all ages. There is also beer, wine, and sangria for the kids at heart.

Disney Dining Plan and Tables in Wonderland are accepted at this dinner show. The show itself is quirky and features a six member cast that sings, dances, and tells jokes. (This experience takes two (2) Disney Dining Plan Table Service meals credits per person, 100% ID check for alcohol)

In 2011, my brother Mikey was picked to be in the show. He was the Ranger. It was an awesome moment to laugh, and it was very cute to my mom. My brother was a team player but has voiced he doesn't want to be a part of the show, he'd rather just watch it. I on the other hand love the show and hope to someday be a part of it. My grandmother who is not into the whole Disney thing(weird right), grabbed a washboard and a spoon and jammed away. My mother loves the show and talks about their fried chicken all the time. It is truly a show for all ages.

Enjoying dinner at the Hoop-Dee-Doo-Musical-Revue

With something for everyone, there’s never a bad time to go down to Pioneer Hall in Fort Wilderness. Traffic can be busy so leave extra time to get to Pioneer Hall. Please note that there is some walking required once you get to the resort.

All the walking there is worth it once you walk into the doors of the Hoop-de-hoop-de-hoop-de-doo!

(Note from Annette: If you are using Disney transportation, you'll need to take a bus or a boat from one of the theme parks or Disney Springs to the Fort Wilderness campground and then, once there, take one of the internal buses to Pioneer Hall.  They have three internal bus routes so check with the bus driver if you aren't sure whether the bus will get you where you need to go).

Save Time by Pre-Ordering Food at Be Our Guest (Breakfast & Lunch)

Pre-order your breakfast or lunch at Be Our Guest, a re.  taurant in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World, to save a lot of wasted time.

Be Our Guest is a beautiful and very popular restaurant in the Fantasyland area of the Magic Kingdom.  The restaurant is a table-service location during dining but is a Disney quick-service location at breakfast and lunch.   It is so popular and the lines were getting so long that Disney has made this the only quick-service location that accepts advance reservations.  You can check availability and make reservations by logging into your "MyDisneyExperience" (MDE) account on a computer or by using the MDE app on your phone or by calling 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463).   If you booked your trip through us, your agent will be happy to take care of this for you, subject to availability.

Once you have a quick-service reservation at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom, you'll definitely want to take advantage of the option to pre-order your food prior to your vacation. Several of my clients have reported really long waits (up to 40-minutes) just to get to order. Pre-ordering takes a little time and thought at home but cuts one line and a lot of wasted time out of your Magic Kingdom experience.  You can pre-order food up to 180 days prior to arrival by logging into your "MyDisneyExperience" (MDE) account on a computer or by using the MDE app on your phone.  This restaurant is a table-service location at dinner so your server will take your order once you are seated.

TIP 1: It is easy to forget what everyone picked when you order your meal weeks in advance so you may want to set up some kind of reminder for yourself.   Some ideas I've heard are to use the appointments or notes function of your smart phone or to schedule an email for delivery on the day of your reservation to an email address you receive on your phone.   If you're using a printed touring plan, you may want to write down the list of who ordered what on that.   You could also write down everyone's name next to their order and take a photo with your phone so that you can just look at that if there are questions and confusion.

Tip 2: If your party is in more than one room and is on a dining plan, you'll want to book as many reservations as rooms.  You'll probably be able to sit together but all of the dining credits for the group will be taken from the account of the reservation of the person who booked the reservation if you don't break it up by room.   They cannot split the credits up by room when you arrive.
